Irena Sendler: a Catholic Hero

Irena Sendler was a Polish Catholic social worker. During World War II, she saved 2,500 Jewish children by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto, providing false documents and sheltering them in individual or group children's homes outside the ghetto.

Love Mirror - Lesson Plan

Love Mirror - This is an activity to do with your students on Saint Valentine’s Day. It focuses on love, as is appropriate for that day, drawing the characteristics of love from the beautiful text of Paul in the First Letter to the Corinthians chapter 13:

Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.

I have used this activity with grade 10-12 students and with RCIA members and they have always reacted very well to it.

The lesson plan comes with a worksheet for your students to fill out, a small scripture poster to print out links to other related resources available online.

The letter

The well known story called “A letter from Jesus” is available on GodTube.com as a 7 minutes video. Yes, it is clearly intended to appeal to emotions and to tug at heart strings, but I like it and I know teens will love to watch it as well. It would be a good starter for a catechesis (using Matthew 25.3-46) on the presence of Christ in others, especially in the outcasts and the most vulnerable in our society.
