FreeRice.com

FreeRice.com is the brainchild of the same person who created the well-known Hunger Site.

It is also a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.

FreeRice has two goals:

  1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
  2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on the site.

The concept is simple and engaging. Visitors are given a word and invited to choose among four words or expressions the closest match. You can also listen to the a sound for the pronunciation of the word to be identified. A correct answer adds 20 grains of rice to a rice bowl on the main page. As you progress through the game, the level of vocabulary difficulty increases and the more one plays, the more rice is donated.

I suspect that high school students would respond very positively to this site. I could easily see a whole class or school participating in a type of vocabulary skills Olympics for hunger through this Web site!

The Hunger Site

The Hunger Site was founded to focus the power of the Internet on a specific humanitarian need: the eradication of world hunger. Since its launch in June 1999, the site has established itself as a leader in online activism, helping to feed the world's hungry. On average, over 220,000 individuals from around the world visit the site each day to click the yellow "Click Here to Give - it's FREE" button. To date, more than 300 million visitors have given more than 500 million cups of staple food.

The staple food funded by clicks at The Hunger Site is paid for by site sponsors and distributed to those in need by Mercy Corps and America's Second Harvest. 100% of sponsor advertising fees goes to our charitable partners.Funds are split between these organizations and go to the aid of hungry people in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and North America.
